In May of 2022, local artist Amy Wald conceived the idea of the Rainbow Bridge while strolling along the LLFB, shortly after the heartbreaking loss of her beloved dogs, Molly and Barkley. As she stumbled upon an empty space in front of the River's Edge Dog Garden, Wald was instantly reminded of a poignant poem she had read about animals' spirits crossing a rainbow bridge. Inspired by this, she decided to bring the poem to life.

With her artistic prowess, Wald constructed a bridge and adorned it with a vibrant rainbow. To honor the memory of Molly and Barkley, she attached their collars to the railing, along with the collars of ten other cherished pets she had lost over the years. Comforting signs were strategically placed around the bridge, explaining its purpose and the poem that had inspired it. Wald patiently awaited the arrival of more pet owners who would find solace in this heartfelt tribute.

It didn't take long for the community to discover the Rainbow Bridge and contribute to its poignant symbolism. Soon, pet owners from near and far began adorning the bridge with collars of their departed companions. Word of this touching memorial spread like wildfire, attracting visitors from other states who were compelled to witness the beauty of the Rainbow Bridge firsthand.

Among these visitors was Anna Lopez, who traveled all the way from Florida, driven by her desire to find solace and a sacred place to honor her beloved dog, recently departed. Little did she know that the bridge would offer her more comfort than she could have ever imagined.

As Lopez arrived at the bridge, her eyes were immediately drawn to a dog tag bearing her dog's name, Chester. Overwhelmed with emotion, she felt an inexplicable connection, as if Chester himself had beckoned her to this very spot. The beauty and tranquility of the Rainbow Bridge left Lopez in awe, but she soon discovered that she was not alone in her astonishment.

Lopez's friend's dog, Ketsia, seemed to have an uncanny emotional reaction upon setting foot on the bridge. Ketsia curiously examined the collars and harnesses adorning the bridge, before unexpectedly climbing onto the guardrail and assuming a prayer-like position. It was as if Ketsia understood the purpose and significance of this sacred place.

Another visitor, Ryan Everhart, noticed an immediate change in his canine companion, Jude, as they approached the bridge. Jude, typically a bundle of energy, suddenly became calm and composed. Everhart watched in awe as Jude paid tribute to each and every collar, sniffing them with reverence. Inspired by this profound experience, Everhart now aspires to construct a similar rainbow bridge in his hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, according to The Dodo.

Today, the Rainbow Bridge stands as a testament to the love and bond shared between humans and their cherished pets. It houses an ever-growing collection of pet collars, numbering in the hundreds, if not thousands. Recognizing the need for expansion, the LLFB crew recently extended the bridge to accommodate more memorials.

The Rainbow Bridge in North Carolina is not just a physical location but a symbol of hope, remembrance, and the enduring bond between humans and their canine companions. It is a place where grief finds solace and love finds eternal rest. Ketsia's emotional reaction to the bridge serves as a reminder of the incredible depth of a dog's love and understanding. As pet owners, we can take comfort in knowing that our furry friends are waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge, where we will be reunited once again.

  1. The critters know, see and sense things that modern society has made us immune to, but they understand things.
