As one of the most ancient natural domestic cat breeds in the United States, the Maine Coon cat is primarily known for its size and dense coat of fur. Also referred to as "the gentle giant," the Maine Coon can survive in the harsh climate of its state or origin, Maine, thanks to the large feline's dense coat of fur. Moreover, Maine Coon is one of the most popular cat breeds among cat lovers in the United States. Often cited as possessing 'dog-like' characteristics, this feline can get incredibly big beyond imagination. Male Maine Coon cats are typically larger than females.
